6. Christmas in the Garden, Silverton
The Christmas in the Garden event is a long-standing tradition in Silverton, and it’s one that you won’t want to miss. The event is held at the historic Bauer House and Gardens, which sits on a hill overlooking downtown Silverton. There are two events: one from December 1st to December 24th, and another from January 1st until January 15th.
The first event begins with an illuminated walkway leading visitors through more than 200 trees decorated by local merchants and community organizations. Visitors can browse through arts and crafts booths while listening to live music or grab some hot chocolate at the outdoor café. 9. Holiday Ale Festival, Pioneer Courthouse Square (Portland)
The Holiday Ale Festival is a celebration of everything wonderful about beer, featuring more than 80 craft breweries from around the world. It takes place over two nights in December and features live music, food vendors, games, and contests with prizes. Plus, it’s held at Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland right next to PNC Tower—a picturesque spot that makes the festival that much more fun!

10. Symphony of a Thousand (Beethoven’s Ninth), Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall (Portland)
Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, performed under the baton of conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, is an impressive way to spend an evening at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland. The Oregon Symphony performs this symphony on September 23rd at 8:00 PM.
This monumental work was written in 1824 and dedicated to Beethoven’s “great friend and benefactor” King Ludwig I of Bavaria. While it was initially well received by the public, conservative critics dismissed it as “vaguely operatic.” However, today it is considered one of the most important works ever composed for orchestra and choir (a total of over 1,000 performers).
The first performance took place on May 7th, 1825 at Vienna’s Theater am Gärtnerplatz with a musical accompaniment consisting only of two pianos; however, for its premiere performance in Munich later that year an entire choir was added!
